Breast Cancer Network Australia

We wish to acknowledge that the design and copyright of the original 'pink lady' on which SBCC's 'pink tartan lady' is based is the property of the Breast Cancer Network Australia. Our thanks goes to BCNA for allowing us to use this logo. 'The lady' symbolises the emphasis BCNA places on the WOMAN who is affected by breast cancer as opposed to the pink ribbon, which usually stands for fundraising for research.

About best clinical practice and treatment options throughout the world to enable us to engage in informed debate with decision makers.
The Scottish Executive in order to raise breast cancer issues, improve service provision and increase funding both for services and for vital research.

WHY?

For over 10 years, SBCC has encouraged women to be breast aware and to attend for screening. But breast cancer rates continue to rise. WHY?

Improved services, enhanced screening and more sophisticated treatment options have ensured that more women are surviving breast cancer. But the sad fact is that the number of women across all age groups being diagnosed with breast cancer is increasing year on year. WHY?

We are constantly being encouraged to adopt a healthy lifestyle – to eat more fruit and vegetables, to take regular exercise and to adopt sensible drinking habits – which may reduce our risk of breast cancer by 5 per cent. Other factors (e.g. age, family/reproductive history) could account for another 45 per cent of our risk. But the other 50 per cent is seldom mentioned. WHY?

Each year, millions of pounds are donated to cancer charities for breast cancer research. Drug companies will continue to develop more sophisticated and more expensive drugs which will ensure that more women will live longer with breast cancer. But the amount of research money directed towards the prevention of breast cancer - so that more women can live without breast cancer - is comparatively small. WHY?

The Scottish Breast Cancer Campaign is calling on government to acknowledge the growing body of scientific evidence linking our environment with breast cancer – whether that environment be our workplace, our home or the air that we breathe – and to take positive steps to reduce the cocktail of carcinogenic (cancer causing) chemicals to which we are exposed in our daily lives.
